Richard “Chubby” Augustus was one of a kind, the ability to be a match-winner and a liability at the same time, but was undoubtedly a fantastic talent and a terrific social member of the club.
Chubby arrived shortly into the beginning of the 2013/14 campaign, his debut in a cup game against high-flying Markfield saw him voted Man of the Match despite conceding 6 goals. He would go on to establish himself quickly as the club’s No.1, taking over from Kieran Warner who was looking to reduce his goalkeeping time due to persistent shoulder injuries.
Shots from distance rarely troubled Augustus who showed incredible reflexes and reach to frustrate many opponents, and whilst not the loudest at the back, and with a strange tendency to stay on his line (sometimes chatting to his dad behind the goal), he formed great partnerships with his defence.
His second season was his breakthrough season, and four clean-sheets helped CSKA challenge for the Division Two title, missing out to eventual winners Leicester Foxes, and then the following season playing Division One for the first time in the club’s history where he racked up 3 clean sheets during the season. A season that also saw CSKA progress to the Arthur Moore Cup Semi-Final.
The 2018/19 season was one that he will be remembered for in particular. Having lost his place at the beginning of the season, he rose to the challenge set by his manager and regained his position, ending the season with the Most Improved Player at the Seasonal Awards.
Stop-Start Covid seasons followed, along with new family commitments, Augustus eventually called time on his CSKA career in 2022 after 181 appearances.
Off the pitch Chubby was forever social, a regular at the pub after games and training sessions, keeping everyone abreast of the latest TV series we need to be watching as well as keeping us entertained with his latest shenanigans.
